I know I'm late in posting this, no excuses other than being extremely busy last week and didn't get around to it.
Here are pictures of the backpack and some of the stuff that will go in it. Like Angela, I am going to be using this as my carry on to/from China, so there might be extras that I wouldn't pack just for an outing while in China.

Since I was thinking that September was document organizer month instead of baby stuff month, I'd been looking for a good expandable file. I use something similar for work (to keep track of receipts for my expense report and stuff like that) and am constantly frustrated by it and knew that it would be even worse in our China backpack which is vertically oriented instead of horizontal like my work bag. Amazingly, someone makes pretty much exactly what I was looking for - it opens from the top instead of the side for easy access in a backpack!

I found these great mesh zipper bags at Target for 4.99 for 3 - they are different sizes and I am going to use them inside an old backpack for now.. it makes it hard to see from the photo but you can see through them, so if I organize myself enough to put feeding stuff in one and diapering stuff in another I think it might just work. My actual list is in excel so I can upload it as file if that works better, but here it is:

Wow - no where near ready and already I need a Sherpa!
Here's what I've got so far:
* Backpack. I'll probably also bring a smaller packable bag or tote for use on short outings while we're there

* Hat for Nora
* Lovey or blanket
* Bib for Nora, snacks (including some for Rob and me, not pictured), bottle of water (not pictured)

I know we have all been giving Michelle advice about packing and hopefully it will help her lighten her load! But I had to post a cute picture of Kate the morning after the evening I got her in China. I brought this baby toothbrush and handed it to her while she sat in the bathroom with me while I brushed my teeth. She loved it and copied me immediately! It was so cute! Every morning she would sit down and hold her little pink toothbrush and copy what Mama was doing! So, I know Sheryl was saying that you probably won't use a toothbrush in China, and that probably will be the case, but look at Kate in this picture!! One year and one day old! (I got her on her 1st birthday in China!) Maybe you could squeeze a little tiny pink toothbrush into the suitcase just in case a perfect photo opportunity appears! LOL

I used packing cubes and pouches on both trips. They were very easy, very organized, and very helpful when travelling! Especially if they had to open our bags and inspect them. The contents were all tidy and organized so it was easy putting stuff back together! They have a really good price on these items at http://www.magellans.com/ for those of you who like to shop online! I am going to buy a few more, too!
Also, I found a great way to create the perfect flight care kit at http://www.loccitane.com/ . They have a new section of travel items and you can chose 4 that you want and you get a flight bag as a gift. This company has wnderful products that you will love! All of the travel items comply with the new FAA rules. I use the hand cream whenever I fly because it is easy on my face, too!
The 20% off applied to everything by Eagle Creek, so I also got two sets of Ear Planes and one set of Kid Planes. The package says that the Kid Planes will work for kids 12 months and up, so we may wind up saving those, depending on how old Nora is when she comes home. Eagle Creek also makes power adapters/converters, alarm clocks, travel blankets and a million other nifty items - all of it on sale through next weekend. BTW I noticed that REI also had a 16 oz thermos on sale for around $10. Here's a link.

I'm digging this diaper bag from Walmart It's just under $20, and it looks like it comes with a changing pad also. For the price seems like a good buy for China. I like the dark brown color, hides the dirt.

I don't have a regimented idea about sugar. My girls have it normal amounts. But I am aware enough not to overload them on it, so I have always bought them 100% juice and watered it down by 50%. They still drink watered down juice and it is refreshing and not too much sugar! Mostly, they drink water. I never give them artificial sweeteners. Now, with all of that being said...

I owned and operated a wonderful preschool and elementary school in Miami for many years and was privy to a lot of information that many parents just didn't know because it wasn't discussed in the spotlight . Two common diaper bag items are vaseline & baby powder, both potentially dangerous health hazards. Vaseline is a petroleum based product and could present a grave danger if swallowed or if applied to a large area of a baby's body, as it has the potential to suffocate and clog breathable areas. We did not use it or keep it at our school.

Q. Is there a way to tell if a bottle has BPA?
A. Unfortunately, it isn’t easy. Here’s a general guide:
BAD:
• Bottles that have a #7 on their recycling label most likely are made of polycarbonate (and contain BPA).
GOOD:
• Bottles that have a #2, #4 , #5 are made of polyethylene or polypropylene—these do NOT have BPA.

Q. What about sippy cups? Breast pump collection bottles?
A. Basically, the same advice applies: avoid those made of polycarbonate plastic. Sippy cups made of opaque plastic are fine. Again, check the bottom of the cup for its recycling number (#7 should be avoided). For breast pump collection bottles, consider BPA-free bottles (such as those from Medela).

Check out this cute little first aid kit. It's a wonderful little travel first aid kit, along with all the cute little band aids to cure boo boos. I think they sell it at target, but check out their website, they have all kinds of disposable travel items.
BOOBOO Care Kit
We have an absolute addiction to these little baby/travel pillows that are 100% down feathers and my children absolutely love them! I thought I would share with you all how wonderful they are and maybe you will buy one for your babies. I know you won't start off with pillows in the cribs but I began using them with Kate when she was 2 years old. Now, we can't travel without them. We use them to snuggle with, not to sleep on! LOL YOu can throw them in the laundry whenever and then toss them in the dryer with a tennis ball and they fluff up and come out as clean as a whistle! They are also very affordable, especially when you consider the high quality of the down. We can't live without these little treasures in our home! I think we have at least 6 of them on hand at any given time. A great sleeping pillow when they get a little older is the jumbo boudoir pillow. They also have cotton covers for the pillows.
